Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Rising: 5,500 ft / 1,700 m to 9,000 ft / 2,740 m | Stretch: 7 km | Hike time: 4–5 hours | Climatic habitat: Montane Forest. The hike begins after traveling from Moshi Town to Marangu Gate for registration and preparation. The route continues through the montane forest toward Mandara Hut, where you spend the night. The mountain environment changes gradually as you gain elevation. Meal plan: Lunch and Dinner.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Rising: 9,000 ft / 2,700 m to 12,100 ft / 3,700 m | Stretch: 11 km | Hike time: 6–8 hours | Climatic habitat: Heathland/Moorland. From Mandara Hut, the trail continues toward Horombo Hut through changing vegetation and increasingly open mountain scenery. The gradual ascent gives you time to adjust to the higher elevation while following the established Marangu Route. Horombo Hut becomes your overnight location. Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Rising: 12,100 ft / 3,700 m to 15,400 ft / 4,700 m | Stretch: 10 km | Hike time: 6–8 hours | Climatic habitat: Alpine Desert. The route leaves Horombo Hut and continues toward Kibo Hut across the alpine desert zone. The landscape becomes more open as vegetation decreases with altitude. Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Rising: 15,400 ft / 4,700 m to 19,300 ft / 5,895 m, then 19,300 ft / 5,895 m to 12,100 ft / 3,700 m | Stretch: 4 km up / 14 km down | Hike time: 10–15 hours | Climatic habitat: Alpine Desert. This is the summit day, continuing from Kibo Hut toward Uhuru Peak before descending to Horombo Hut. It is the longest hiking stage of the route and requires steady pacing. After reaching the summit area, the descent continues toward the overnight hut. Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, Moshi and Arusha
Rising: 12,100 ft / 3,700 m to 5,500 ft / 1,700 m | Hike time: 5–7 hours | Stretch: 18 km. The final mountain day descends from Horombo Hut through the lower sections of the Marangu Route to Marangu Gate. Day 6: Arusha to Serengeti
